The community was named after the city in Egypt. Important cotton market and early center for blues and rock n' roll. Site of major Civil War battle in 1862. The community was ravaged by yellow fever in the 1870s. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel here in 1968. Memphis is the birthplace of the Piggly-Wiggly grocery chain .
